How has COVID-19 affected renter behaviors?

As states start opening up again, there will be significant moving activity and those potential movers are looking now. The renters who are searching are serious about renting. Based on RentPath surveys, of consumers who submitted leads but have not made a final decision, only 10%¹ have decided to pause or stop their search.


Additional findings:¹
  • The desire or need to move is still prominent.
  • The majority of shoppers (66%) want to move within the next 60 days.
  • 49% of renters say a pre-recorded video tour is an acceptable replacement for an in-person tour.
  • Prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, 3% of tours were directed to a virtual format. This has now increased to 50%.
  • 30% of people say that access to responsive and friendly customer service is what they need to make their search easier.

Updates to listings and consumer sites.

Our team has been hard at work making site updates to assist both consumers and property managers related to our COVID-19 lifestyle changes.


A few changes we’ve made for you:
  • New video module. Customers are able to upload pre-recorded walkthrough video files, and there is no limit on the number of videos per property.
  • Live video & self-guided tour options. Customers can indicate whether their property supports live video and/or self-guided tours so prospective renters have the option to request one if you offer them.
  • Customer 3D tour restrictions lifted. Customers at any tier level can provide their own 3D tour links. Please reach out to our Customer Success team and we will add the URL to your listing.
  • 3D/panoramic tour & HD video usage rights suspended. During this time, you can use RentPath’s 3D/panoramic tours and/or HD videos on your property website or in your marketing emails. Please reach out to our Customer Success team and we will email the URL to you.
  • Tier restrictions have been lifted for existing RentPath media, allowing existing panoramic and video tours to go live for 6,000 advertising properties.
  • The ApartmentGuide site has launched a COVID-19 related blog page dedicated to assisting renters in their search for a new home during this difficult time.
  • Office hour updates. Default messaging displays stating office and walk-in hours are limited. Customers can also display if they’re closed or open for virtual leasing only by contacting Customer Success.
